THE CAMBRIDGE GLASS RAINBOW OF COLORS

When I think of the Cambridge colors manufactured over the past century, I tend to think pretty much in terms of crystal, pink, moonlight blue (light blue), topaz (yellow), emerald green, amber, heatherbloom and ebony. But the Cambridge color palette was extensive, with many variations on basic glass colors. Cambridge experimented with different colors and came up with subtle variations to complement their lines.

Cambridge expanded on the basic amber to include Madeira and mocha. Madeira was a light golden shade, somewhere between canary yellow and the deeper amber. Mocha is a much softer shade of amber and a bit easier to confuse with Madeira. The Cambridge amber color is much darker than madeira or mocha.

Mandarin gold is a medium shade of yellow and deeper in color than gold krystol Gold krystol is actually closer to yellow than amber.

Azurite, Avocado, Windsor blue, crown Tuscan, jade, primrose, helio, violet and ivory were opaque colors manufactured by Cambridge over the years. Azurite is a light opaque blue while Windsor blue is a shade again lighter than azurite. Helio is an opaque light purple color and violet a similar color but a slightly darker. Crown Tuscan is an opaque pink color and ivory a light cream color. Avocado is a greenish yellow color while primrose is a true yellow.

Cobalt blue, moonlight blue, royal blue, ritz blue, bluebell, willow blue are the various shades of blue in the Cambridge lines, and for me, extremely confusing. Cobalt blue is actually a medium shade of transparent blue. Then there is ritz blue, and I can’t tell the difference between this blue and the cobalt blue. Bluebell is a medium shade of blue. And then there is willow blue and moonlight blue — again, I can’t really see much difference, perhaps if I had them side by side. Royal blue is a very deep blue and more in line with what I would consider cobalt blue, except that there is a softness to this most beautiful shade of blue.

Peach-blo is a soft light pink color; larosa is a medium pink.

Carmen is the only shade of red I know of, and what a shade it is! While there may be some variation in the shades, it is always Carmen and I never saw a piece that didn’t stand out.

Topaz is yellow-green color often referred to as Vaseline.

Heatherbloom is a quite beautiful shade of lavender that changes color from orchid to lavender depending on the lighting; amethyst is a deep shade and mulberry somewhat close to amethyst, perhaps a bit lighter.

Forest green is the darkest shade of Cambridge green while emerald green is a lighter transparent green. Pistacchio would be the lightest shade of green.

There were other colors such as Mardi Gras, rubina, ebony and smoke. There is no difficulty in distinguishing these wonderful colors.

Not every color is described in this article, but I believe that most of them are. For the best information, with pictures and values, I recommend “Colors in Cambridge” by National Cambridge Collectors, Inc. Other colors not mentioned are included as well as a more indepth discussion of the color variations.

Caprice

Caprice is a pattern manufactured by the Cambridge Glass Company from the 1940’s to 1957. Caprice was made in several colors, but crystal is the most easily obtained, and there is a lot of moonlight blue out there as well, but because it is the most sought after color it will likely bring the highest prices. Another available color is alpine caprice, in moonlight blue but with satinized panels or bases. I have heard of some crystal out there as well. While alpine Caprice is gaining popularity, but is not as collectible as those pieces without the satinized panels.

Some of the caprice molds are owned by Summit Art Glass, and there are some newer items out in the marketplace. They include ashtrays, 5″ 2 handled jelley bowl, 8″ 3 part relish, 11″ 2 handled oval bowl, 11″, 12″ 4 part and 3 part relishes, the bridge set; butter dish, creamers, mayonnaise sets, oil bottles, 9-1/2″ dinner plate, some of the stems and tumblers, flat salt & pepper and salad dressing set.

Cherry Blossom

CHERRY BLOSSOM DEPRESSION GLASS

In my travels I come across many reproductions of popular depression glass patterns. One that I seem to come accross the most is the Cherry Blossom pattern. I’m providing you with some tips to help you pick out the reproductions from the real thing.

History

Made by Jeannette Glass Company from 1930 to 1939, Cherry Blossom is one of the most popular patterns for collectors. Unfortunately, it is probably also the most reproduced. The original colors were pink, gree, delphite and a few items in jadeite, yellow and translucent green.

Cherry Blossom has been reproduced in pink, green, blue, delphite, cobalt, red and iridized colors.

The following items have been reproduced (that I am aware of). Keep in mind that pieces with crude leaves and smooth outer edges are reproductions. Also, the color can be a major giveaway. Many of the colors, especially the pink and green, are not nice and don’t look like the original colors. I recommend you study some known original pieces to get a “feel” for the real thing. Vist a reputable antique shop and talk with experinced dealers. You’ll find they are happy to help sort out the real from the fake.

CEREAL BOWL: Original bottom well is 2″ across, repro is 2-1/2″ across

8-1/2″ BOWL: Original has jagged edged leaves, repro has crude, smooth edged leaves

CAKE STAND: Original lines between the arches match up with feet, not so on the repro, leaves have too many lines looking more like feathers.

CHILD’S BUTTER DISH: There is no original – never made so if you see it out there, it is definitely a reproduction.

13″ DIVIDED PLATTER: Original platter was much lighter, repros are heavier

PITCHERS: Original have scalloped bottom, all over pattern, branch on bottom has texture; repros are smooth, cherries are textured on repros as well.

2 HANDLED TRAY: Original is lighter than repro, repros are heavier.

TUMBLERS: Original tumblers have a stronger pattern than the repros. Also the arch between the pattern sections is 3 bands on the original and 1 band on the repros.

SALT & PEPPER SHAKERS: Originally made in pink and green and extremely rare, booking well over $1000.00 per set. A repro will have a weaker pattern and will be found in odd colors that were never originally made. Remember, if the price is too good to be true, it is very probably a reproduction.

EAPG Rosette by Bryce

Rosette EAPG by Bryce

Bryce Brothers of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, manufactured this non-flint pattern glass in the late 1880’s. It was reissued by the U.S. Glass Company around 1891. To the best of my knowledge, it was only made in clear and has not been reproduced.
