CHERRY BLOSSOM DEPRESSION GLASS
In my travels I come across many reproductions of popular depression glass patterns. One that I seem to come accross the most is the Cherry Blossom pattern. I’m providing you with some tips to help you pick out the reproductions from the real thing.
History
Made by Jeannette Glass Company from 1930 to 1939, Cherry Blossom is one of the most popular patterns for collectors. Unfortunately, it is probably also the most reproduced. The original colors were pink, gree, delphite and a few items in jadeite, yellow and translucent green.
Cherry Blossom has been reproduced in pink, green, blue, delphite, cobalt, red and iridized colors.
The following items have been reproduced (that I am aware of). Keep in mind that pieces with crude leaves and smooth outer edges are reproductions. Also, the color can be a major giveaway. Many of the colors, especially the pink and green, are not nice and don’t look like the original colors. I recommend you study some known original pieces to get a “feel” for the real thing. Vist a reputable antique shop and talk with experinced dealers. You’ll find they are happy to help sort out the real from the fake.
CEREAL BOWL: Original bottom well is 2″ across, repro is 2-1/2″ across
8-1/2″ BOWL: Original has jagged edged leaves, repro has crude, smooth edged leaves
CAKE STAND: Original lines between the arches match up with feet, not so on the repro, leaves have too many lines looking more like feathers.
CHILD’S BUTTER DISH: There is no original – never made so if you see it out there, it is definitely a reproduction.
13″ DIVIDED PLATTER: Original platter was much lighter, repros are heavier
PITCHERS: Original have scalloped bottom, all over pattern, branch on bottom has texture; repros are smooth, cherries are textured on repros as well.
2 HANDLED TRAY: Original is lighter than repro, repros are heavier.
TUMBLERS: Original tumblers have a stronger pattern than the repros. Also the arch between the pattern sections is 3 bands on the original and 1 band on the repros.
SALT & PEPPER SHAKERS: Originally made in pink and green and extremely rare, booking well over $1000.00 per set. A repro will have a weaker pattern and will be found in odd colors that were never originally made. Remember, if the price is too good to be true, it is very probably a reproduction.
